IV B SOCIAL SERVICE Trip 2015

On 10th October, 2015, our class 4B, went for a Social Service trip to the B. J. Home for Children, Matunga. We travelled there by a school bus. It was a short 20 minute, fun-filled journey. But the real fun was just beginning! On reaching there, we took a tour around the orphanage. We saw the girls’ and boys’ dormitories, their lockers, drying room, dining hall and their multi-purpose hall. The inmates are trained to make their own beds and dry their own clothes, which none of us generally do at our homes. We then proceeded to their multi-purpose hall, where we divided ourselves into groups of six, and interacted with the kids, inquiring about their name, class, age, hobbies, etc.

Next, we taught our new friends, how to make colorful paper lanterns, using coloured paper, streamers, glitter and sequences. We helped each other colour, cut and paste. Once the lanterns were ready, we hung them around the hall, decorating the place and making it look bright and beautiful for Diwali.

The following activity was a sing-along , with a medley of songs, we had learnt at school, that we presented to them. The children were a wonderful and receptive audience and watched us quietly, while we sang and danced. After our performances it was their turn. They performed a series of amazing acrobatic stunts, which left us awestruck! Some younger children did a cute little dance, which received a huge round of applause and cheer.

After all the performances, one of their teachers invited all of us to dance together, to the tunes of some popular Bollywood songs. Everyone was reluctant to leave, but sadly, we had to go back to school. All teary eyed, we bade them farewell and trudged towards our bus. I will always remember the joy and happiness on the little children’s faces, while receiving all the goodies we had carried along for them. This trip made me realize that indeed ‘Kindness is Priceless’. I wish to thank our school and our teachers for taking us on this experiential class trip.
