Shanaya Thirwani- A Champion for Stray Animals

Action taken: Being caring by inspiring people and participating in collecting money to help an animal NGO

Shanaya Thirwani of DAIS Class 3 B took her learning beyond the classroom this weekend. She demonstrated the Learner Profile attribute of ‘caring’ through her actions and connected it with the ongoing class transdisciplinary theme ‘Sharing the Planet’.

Last Monday, a tiny kitten named “Lucky” from her building unfortunately came under a car and passed away and the little kids in the building were very upset and cried a lot. They even had a little funeral for him. Shanaya did not want to just stop at that, she thought she needed to do something about it. So she decided that she would raise some money in memory of Lucky, the kitten, so she could donate funds to an NGO that helps care for stray dogs and cats. She decided to sell tea and cookies in the building. She also got a few of her building friends to join in and they baked 90 cookies. They also made some kokum sherbet and other items like Appy juice and chocolates in case some people would prefer to take away rather than eat immediately.

She got a great response from the people in the building, who bought a lot of stuff and even donated money just to help the cause. She collected Rs. 6855/- which she donated to the NGO, ‘Humane Society for Strays’, with her parents’ help. Here, she even used her knowledge and understanding of handling money appropriately.
