ANGEL XPRESS FOUNDATION

ANGEL XPRESS FOUNDATION

The Angel Xpress Foundation is a non-profit organization that believes that every child deserves the opportunity to discover their true potential by creating opportunities for educated adults and students to teach and mentor underprivileged learners. By working with this organization, we taught a group of 12-15 students from grades 6-7 the subjects of English, Mathematics, Health and Sanitation, Science, and Social Science.

Due to the COVID restrictions, we could not work with the children physically, so we conducted weekly virtual lessons with them every Friday. We tried to use our time with the children to help them draw parallels to situations in the real world. Besides academics, we kept reiterating the importance of sustainable living and how they can take small steps to save the world around them.

Our experience with AXF on the online platform allowed us to incorporate visual aids in Zoom whiteboards, online crosswords, games, and video presentations, which we may not have had access to had it been physical. One of the most significant aims of our team was to ensure that learning occurred in a fun and enriching environment. We occasionally include games like “name, place, animal, thing” and “spot the difference” to give the students a break from the academics and build a good rapport with them to ensure future learning is more interactive and inclusive. We implemented a reflective learning method wherein, we asked the students to reflect on their learnings after each session to ensure they fully comprehended what they were taught. Midway through our term, we began asking the students to share particular topics of interest or difficulty, thereby focusing on these topics in the following lessons to clarify basic concepts, albeit for one student. It was gratifying to see students making an effort to ensure that topics they struggled with in their exams were covered in their lessons with us.

Towards the end of 2021, we also introduced the concept of New Year’s Resolutions to the children and asked them to set goals for themselves for the upcoming year. We regularly checked in with individual students and their progress with their selected goals, be it learning to draw, exercising, reading, or dancing.

Thus, through this enriching journey, we were able to engender a lasting impact on the students’ lives, even if we had a small cohort.

We may not be angels but we tried our best to be angels in their lives.
