Class 3 Dons Editor’s Lens
Class 3 is currently inquiring into the transdisciplinary theme ‘How we express ourselves’. In this unit, the learners are conducting an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs, and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; and our appreciation of the aesthetic.
To extend their learning further, the class invited Ms. Smriti Kanodia, a DAIS parent, who came in as a guest speaker. In 2004, at the age of 24, Ms. Kanodia founded the publishing company Paprika Media, which launched and published the internationally acclaimed entertainment, lifestyle and information magazine Time Out India. The purpose of Time Out magazine was to inform and entertain, not persuade.
During the session, Ms. Kanodia explained to the learners how the print media functions and the role of each team. Following the talk, the students worked in small groups to collaboratively design a magazine by undertaking the roles of an editor, editorial team, design team, layout team and marketing team. Once the students were ready, they presented their knowledge and understanding of the whole process to their peers and teachers. This opportunity for experiential learning developed in our students, their skills and IB learner profile attitudes of being good communicators, critical thinkers, and inquirers.
