Visit to Shepherds Widows’ Home

On Saturday, November 11th 2017, as part of the Social Service Project, the children of Class 3B visited the Shepherds Widows’ Home, at Byculla. The children enthusiastically awaited the day, as it was their first experience of a social service visit. The group had carried along with them cartons of daily requirements as requested by the home. The purpose of the visit was to comfort and empathize with the elderly people who have been separated from their families.

On reaching there we assembled in a hall, after which we were joined by the residents of the old-age home. The sight of them walking alone, without any moral support, some of them weak and frail; was extremely emotional.

The children started the day’s visit with the school prayer and a few ‘bhajans’. All of them had practised old songs and dedicated these songs to the elders of the home. Even they joined us in the songs and each one of them had a smile on the face, as they were probably reminded of past memories and old times. This really livened the place and the inmates of the home enjoyed and participated wholeheartedly. The aunties enthusiastically participated by playing the tambourine and ‘manjiras’.

The children’s performances were thoroughly enjoyed by the elders, as it brought cheer on their wrinkled faces. After this, the children entertained them by telling stories, reciting poems and also interacting with them. They too sang songs with a lot of enthusiasm. While leaving, the inmates sang for the children and showered their blessings.

It was a very joyful morning and the children gave them a picture frame prepared by them, as a token of their love. The inmates of the home were very touched by this gesture, which they will cherish for a long time.

The teachers who accompanied the children also interacted with the inmates and ensured that it was an enjoyable morning for every member.
