First Lego League

Our Team with the Championship Trophy

The FIRST Lego League (FLL) is a programme that allows children from around the world to take their interest in robotics, science and engineering to the next level. This year, the theme of the FLL was “Senior Solutions” and it was released on August 28, 2012

Our team named “Team R Factor” had been working on the FLL for over 7 months, qualifying from Regionals to Nationals and finally, the Asia Pacific Championship held at Sydney, Australia from the 4-6th of July 2013 at the Macquarie University. There were 31 teams from 17 countries and we interacted with teams from Egypt, Brazil, Australia, Korea, Japan, China, Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, etc.

Our Robot for the Robot Game

The FLL judging process is divided into 4 categories: Robot Game, Robot Design, Project & Core Values; 1/3 on core values, 1/3 on project, 1/6 for Robot Game and 1/6 for Robot Design. The Robot Game tests the participants on their engineering skills while the Project is designed to make them more aware about a certain idea or theme.

The children are expected to do extensive research on the theme while creating their own project that tackles a problem. The Core Values aim to develop the children socially by instilling the values of teamwork and friendly competition among them along with professionalism in their work. Teams are awarded in each individual category and we placed 3rd in the table for the Robot Game. We got the highest score in Core Values and Project.

As a part of our project, we created “Saffron”, a device that helps prevent cooking accidents. Seniors tend to become forgetful as they age. As a result, cooking accidents now occur with increasing frequency. Saffron is triggered by a closed circuit that activates a timer and an ultrasonic sensor. The timer tracks the elapsed time and displays the level of heat of the stove through sound and light. The ultrasonic sensor monitors and subsequently switches off an unattended stove. The circuit is closed when the gas knob is turned off to conserve battery. If the stove has been left unattended during cooking, Saffron sounds an alarm to warn the seniors.

We were awarded the Champions Award, which is the highest award that recognizes the efforts of the students.
