I&S Grade 6 Making a River Model

Grade 6 I&S students unleashed their creativity and delved into the world of rivers with a hands-on river model simulation. Using clay, paint, and miniature objects, they crafted a miniature representation of a river system, capturing its meandering course, branching tributaries, and the surrounding landscape. This immersive activity not only enhanced their understanding of river systems but also sparked their imagination and helped them appreciate the beauty of nature.

Student reflections:

I really enjoyed making the river model and had fun creating it with my peers. I learned a lot about the river systems. We had divided the work between all of us so that everyone collaborated on the project. I learnt that if you work as team anything can be possible.

My group forgot our materials on Monday and so we had to borrow a base, paints, foil and more. Even though we did not have so much we managed to make a model that somewhat resembles a river model. I learnt that with the help of teamwork, kindness and hard work, ANYTHING is possible. I also learnt about the parts, and progress of the river.

I think we made the model pretty accurate, and it is quite realistic if you compare it to an actual river bank. I learnt about deltas and estuaries, also about how the river meanders and curves. We made the river coming from it source in the mountains to an estuary. I really enjoyed collaborating with each other and I really liked learning through a planning, crafting and painting a river model.

When we were creating the river model we had to find a way to place everything appropriately, how exactly we wanted to make it look and we had to manage our time. I think we did it a quite well and worked together as a team to finish it. It was a bit tough to properly mould the mountain and paint everything in time. I learnt how to better work as a team, how to manage my time and how to bring out the best in each other. I learnt how to make the best of the situation and that there's always something good even in the worst of things .
