JUNIOR DAIMUN 2016

On the 24th of September, 2016, DAIS hosted the second annual session of Junior DAIMUN. Junior DAIMUN is a student-run initiative that seeks to acquaint DAIS students from the 7th and 8th grade with the basic principles of Model United Nations (MUN) in an exciting yet nurturing environment. Rather than simply read about the THIMUN Rules of Procedure that DAIMUN adheres to, the children became delegates, representing their respective countries and organisations to the best of their abilities through extensive research and preparation. This year’s session was the largest yet, with over 115 students participating.



Preparation for Junior DAIMUN 2016 began as early as July, as the committees being simulated were decided. Ultimately, a diverse range of committees was selected so as to expose the delegates to topics of varying scope and complexity. Shortly thereafter, the Secretariat was chosen, with each member flawlessly versed in procedure and able to help solve any problem the delegates may have had. With the groundwork in place, the Secretariat organized workshops every Tuesday for the delegates, explaining the tenets of MUN to them and aiding them in their research. As the conference drew closer, the delegates were allotted their respective countries/organisations and committees so they could prepare for a specific agenda.

On the day of the conference, the eager delegates split up into their respective committees. While sustainable energy was discussed in the ECOSOC, DISEC tackled the problems associated with disposal of weapons and ECOFIN sought to ensure sustainable provision of food resources on a global scale. Interrupted only by a short snack break, each of the delegates positively contributed to committee proceedings, almost begging for the session not to end. On the whole, Junior DAIMUN 2016 was a fruitful experience for all involved, be it as delegate or organiser.
