Service Through Art
Child labour, voting and pollution. These are some issues that we IB students know about in theory, but have never fully understood their immediacy. This year, as part of our MAD project, our tutor group embraced these problems as we set out to highlight their immediacy to an audience that has become inured to them.
The method of sending our message was a topic that was debated, but eventually, we decided to paint our messages on an outdoor wall, amalgamating creativity and service in this project in 3 simple yet effective images which are shown below.
In our attempt to tackle national and global issues we realized that we were becoming more sensitive to these problems. As we unearthed the mind boggling statistics related to the number of children working instead of attending school and the massive environmental degradation caused everyday, we were taken aback. As we carefully designed and painted the slogans hoping to effect a change in society, we were fulfilling the fundamental principles of the MAD Project: we were making a difference.
