Primary Read Aloud Project

To raise the standards of literacy in the elementary years, DAIS Primary School launched a reading programme called 'The Read Aloud Project', with the support of ‘Spin A Yarn India’, which works in collaboration with Bhasha Sangam (India) and UNESCO Indigenous Language Program.

The aim of the project is to arouse enthusiasm for reading and reading aloud, and to bring children into contact with the written and narrated word, as early as possible. The project also emphasizes the importance of a parent's involvement in their child's literacy development. Reading regularly by an adult, has been shown to significantly increase the rate of progress that children make with their own reading.

Through this project, we encourage parents to come to school to read and interact with a small group of students. The first session of this project was conducted on 13th November, 2019. The theme of the session was ‘The Environment and Us’. Keeping the theme in mind, we identified several open areas of the school, where children could be engaged learners, and also be one with nature.

The parent ‘guest readers’ showed great enthusiasm and participated actively to the programme. The choice of book and the strategy for delivery, was the brain child of each parent volunteer. It was a treat watching the parents read, enact, quiz, sing and dance with the children.

The parents helped our children explore the wealth of knowledge books have to offer, with an effective literacy investment of their time.
