Project Day : Concept – based learning
Theme : Symbols

This year the students of Class 6 were very excited when they discovered a common theme across our curriculum: ‘Symbols.’ A symbol is something that stands for something else or a letter, a character, or a sign used instead of a word, to represent a quantity, position and relationship. This year’s topic, ‘Symbols’ opened up exciting possibilities for investigation and research in all subjects. Working with the concept of symbols and applying it to the various disciplines of our curriculum was a challenging task. A month of extensive research, group activities, brain-storming sessions and class discussions, paved the way for the Project Day of Classes 6-A and 6-B.

We learnt about the symbols and symbolism in Literature. The study of Math and Science, of course revolves around symbols. Geography uses OS symbols in map work and decoding terms and demographic locations. The study of the Egyptian civilization opened up a vast world of Symbols, ‘the hieroglyphics’ that is the ancient form of Egyptian pictorial writing.

Music is all about the ‘stave and clef’, the prominent western music symbols. Set to the music of an old song sung by the Beach Boys, we learned how to read music. The all powerful symbol of Yoga –the ‘OM’, awed us and so on and so forth. We discovered an exciting way to learn and understand symbols and how they form an integral part of our learning. Art work also took on symbolic hues when we learned how to draw symbols of Adinkre African folk art. The dance performances showcased the symbolic presentation of seasons in all their nuances. What really is the relevance of symbols in our curriculum was conveyed effectively through the performances and projects.
