Save the beach, its within your reach
For our ‘Make a Difference’ (MAD) project under the aegis of CAS, we combined our creativity and compassion to make an attempt to clean Juhu beach, Mumbai. The beach is one of Mumbai’s foremost tourist attractions but it is not without its own set of problems, out of which litter happens to be the primary one. Each year, tons of waste trashed onto the beach and the existing system of cleaning is insufficient. Many people have made a start and the situation has improved but is far from being ideal yet.
As students, we believe that we can make a positive difference by spreading awareness and contributing to the cleanliness of the beach. If we start spreading a message now, sometime or the other our power as the youth of the country will trickle down to the rest of the population and we will manage to achieve something conclusive.
We have involved various age groups from the school to widen the base of the project. We started off by creating posters and video to popularize the movement in school. We then followed this up by going to the beach ourselves. At the beach, we focused on primarily two activities.
Firstly, we physically picked up litter from the beach in garbage bags and disposed them in dustbins on the beach. Secondly and more importantly, we spoke to various people on the beach – vendors, hawkers, tourists, beach goers, photographers…anyone whom we could find. We spread our message to them and asked them to spread the message further.

What they can achieve by being on the beach regularly, we can never achieve sitting in our classrooms. Hence, it is necessary to garner their support and use it efficiently for the benefit of the beach.
When we had to dispose the garbage in the dustbins on the beach, we realized how few dustbins are on the beach. Without dustbins, the beach is bound to be littered and dirty. So in the future, we plan to install permanent dustbins on the beach with the help of the younger students in the school as well. Hopefully, we will be successful in our objective and make Juhu beach a scenic, picturesque place where one would like to spend a few quiet moments enjoying the beauty.
