Senior Fitizens

COVID-19 has impacted people worldwide due to the resultant social distancing norms and lockdown rules. All of us in our CAS group were interested in sports and fitness, and therefore we aimed to use our passion and knowledge to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by the pandemic. We identified senior citizens as a group that was heavily affected during this period, as safety measures meant that their ability to indulge in physical activity and exercise was severely hampered. Therefore, we set out to conduct weekly fitness sessions with a group of senior citizens to ensure that they avoided a sedentary lifestyle and maintained their fitness during these difficult times. Our group devised a list of suitable exercises for a geriatric group and recorded a video that included step-by-step instructions about performing the exercises.

We conducted five sessions on Zoom with around fifteen participants. We displayed our workout video on the screen during the session and helped the participants with any questions regarding the exercises and routine. These sessions were highly enriching, and it was amazing to see the enthusiasm and energy of the senior citizens. Despite their age, they were willing to learn and push their limits in an effort to improve their fitness. Their drive and commitment was a source of inspiration to all of us. Our ‘Senior Fitizens’ initiative was a memorable experience, and we firmly believe that we achieved our initial goal of making a positive impact on the health and fitness of the geriatric population near us.
