Through the Lens of an Author

“Tell me the facts and I will learn;
Tell me the truth and I will believe;
But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.”

Native American Proverb

What a beautiful way to learn! Story-telling promotes language and literacy skills in the formative years. It provokes curiosity and ignites the inner story that is within each child.

As a start to many future sessions, author Sonia Mehta had an interactive story session with the children of Class 1. The genre selected was ‘Feelings’, keeping in mind that it is important for children to be able to recognize how they are feeling, including negative emotions like anger, jealousy, boredom, etc. Ms. Mehta narrated a jungle story on the topic, and suggested strategies to analyze and deal with all our emotions.

‘Asking questions is a unique gift of childhood!’ The students were encouraged to ask questions, which were in abundance, and they were tackled very prudently.

The children were forthright in their answers and were enthusiastic participants during the discussion. It was a pleasure to hear their spontaneous and innocent responses.
