TEAM-A Timely Rescue

What started as a light drizzle on the morning of Tuesday 29th August 2017, turned into the most deadly downpour by noon that day, that Mumbai has witnessed in a long time!

 

The rains would not stop . Every single Mumbaikar faced a huge problem. But the most affected were the homeless and the poor . Their homes were washed away , their sheets soaked and food grains ruined.

 

 

TEAM - a five member group of teens lost all their sleep trying to find solutions to help such people.

 

At 8 am on Wednesday they decided to act! They decided to feed as many people as possible with home cooked food.

 

 

What they did ..........

• created whatssap messages to prepare individual containers of home cooked non-spicy food
• they arranged to pick these food packets with the help of volunteers and distribute to the slums. Pick-ups were from the southern tip of Cuffe Parade all the way to Kandivali.

 

Mumabikars called, prepared, and sent home-cooked food towards the cause, in abundance. They created miniature groups to help TEAM - to give an example, the building Imperial at Lower Parel, sent 550 boxes of food!

 

In all, the collections crossed 2,000 boxes by 4 pm, with the help of over 32 volunteers, who picked up parcels via uber, cars, trains and even buses.

 

The goal was to feed all the hungry by evening.

 

The biggest challenge that lay before TEAM was to sort out these food bags into - perishable and non perishable items.

 

The perishable ones were taken first to the Kurla slums - a slum dwelling with over 800 people, all of who were soaked in 5 feet of water and had not had a meal in 36 hours!

 

They were hungry , tired and delighted to be fed.

 

The next stop was Bandra reclamation. Over 500 children and adults had their first meal of the day by 7 pm.

 

The non-perishable food which had biscuits, long-life milk, fruit, bread, etc were distributed on Thursday morning at the largest slum in Khar-Danda.

 

 

This has been the most satisfying 24 hours that TEAM has ever experienced.

 

TEAM is so delighted to have had the support of over 125 homes, in the span of a few hours, having fed a total of over 2000 mouths!
