Thimun Singapore 2015

This year, the THIMUN East Asia Conference’s central theme was the Millennium Development Goals, a set of time-bound targets that must be achieved through global partnership in order to combat extreme poverty and facilitate growth and development. Over the four days of the conference, the students debated issues surrounding and strategies to achieve the MDGs, with ambassadors Urshita Vaishnav, 10B and Poorvika Mehra, 9A. Dhirubhai Ambani International School’s representative delegation comprised of students from Year 10 IGCSE and Year 9 ICSE, and were given the delegations of the Republic of Korea and Myanmar.

The conference began with an informal lobbying session on the first day, wherein students interacted with the other members of their committee, followed by opening speeches by the ambassadors on the second day of the conference. Lobbying proved to be a strength for our delegation, with most delegates leading large blocs of delegates from all around the world in supporting and signing their resolutions. Delegates were in various committees, from the Disarmament and Security Commission to the Economic and Financial Committee, passing resolutions in the Economic and Social Council and the Social and Humanitarian Council along with numerous innovative and constructive amendments. Most committees had an overwhelming strength of over 130 delegates, though this did not keep our delegation from standing out!

Navya Mehta, 10C, in the ECOSOC, single-handedly passed a resolution on multi-stakeholder partnerships with no votes against; Bhaven Shah also passed his resolution on Sustainable development in the Budgetary committee.

Prasidh Chhabria, 10B, representing Myanmar in the Social and Humanitarian Council (THIMUN's largest committee) also submitted and passed a resolution on immunological efforts in the General Assembly Plenary with an overwhelming majority, with invaluable assistance from the entire Myanmar delegation. Finally, ambassadors Poorvika and Urshita confidently delivered their opening speeches at the GA's first session.

Over the course of the trip, our delegation also enjoyed visiting Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands and a lively night market. Highlights of the conference also included awe-inspiring speeches in the opening ceremony by the ambassador of the Netherlands to the United Nations and a director of Medecins Sans Frontieres, and a formal delegate dinner and dance at the end of the conference. Altogether, the week was not only productive, but an extremely enriching, memorable experience.
