On January 27th 2021, the DAIS Leadership Series was graced by the presence of Dr. Rupinder Singh Sodhi, the Managing Director of Amul.
Amul, or the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, Ltd., is India’s largest Food Products and FMCG organisation. He has 39 years of experience in leading & developing the cooperative sector within the Indian dairy industry, having served dairy farmers in several capacities. For more than three decades, Dr. Sodhi has worked under the direct guidance & mentorship of the father of the white revolution, Dr. Verghese Kurien, and has ensured that values cherished by Dr. Kurien, such as integrity, dedication, courage, honesty, and commitment to both farmers and consumers, remain deeply ingrained in the culture of Amul. He has been responsible for creating the current structure of the Amul, enabling the organisation to maintain and enhance its leadership status within the Indian dairy industry.
The main learning that students gained from Dr. Sodhi’s talk is that consistency is the key to success. Amul has been amongst the foremost brands of India for decades, and their consistency is the reason for this. He elaborated on his passion for the food and agriculture industry, and how it is often overlooked, despite the elephantine role that it plays in the nation’s economic growth.
Along with his own experiences from being a manager in Amul to moving up to Managing Director, he also spoke about Amul’s unique model. The family-like atmosphere where every person involved, from the farmers to workers to managers, holds an important stake in the company, and welfare of every individual is ensured. After his talk, he also answered the several questions of both students and teachers, elaborating on Amul’s business model, gaining success in the agriculture industry, and of course, Amul’s famous advertisement campaign. His talk provided a fresh outlook on an industry students rarely interact with, along with several keys to gain success in every field.
