Talk by Mr. Anil Kumble

On August 28, 2013, we had the unique opportunity to interact with Mr. Anil Kumble, a former international cricketer, ex-captain of the Indian cricket team and current ICC Chairman. Students from grades 9 to 12 poured in, eager to meet such a legendary figure. Keeping with our expectations, he shared with us how he first developed a passion for cricket and how this passion soon led to his becoming an integral part of the Indian cricket team at the young age of 19. He shared with us the flak that he received on account of his unorthodox bowling style; however, his reliance on pace and accuracy, coupled with bounce and subtle variations in pace ultimately resulted in him becoming one of the world’s best bowlers.

Mr. Anil Kumble retired from his illustrious career with 619 test wickets! However, this was not without immense effort on his part. He highlighted the struggles that he braved all the time behind the scenes – most people knew him for his wickets, but little did people know of the struggles he had to overcome to pursue his education in engineering along with a budding cricket career. He had to sacrifice outings with friends, remain focussed on his classes, and have private study sessions with his professor every single day. It was clear for the audience that all roads to success are dotted with speed breakers; without commitment and perseverance there is no glory.

Mr. Kumble also touched upon the evolution of the game of cricket. Today, cricket has become so competitive, that pursuing a second career is next to impossible. In addition, he elaborated on the role of the support staff in today’s day and age; these days a team cannot travel without a trainer and a physiotherapist, and the support staff comfortably outnumbers the players. Previously, support staff translated to just a manager and doctor and medical treatment was either a painkiller or an ultrasound. However, he underlined that with these changes, the game has evolved for the better and as a result, the game has seen a great surge in interest. He also shared with us his opinion about the spectacular 10 wicket haul against Pakistan in 1999, which shall remain engraved in the memories of die-hard cricket fans worldwide.

Our much-anticipated interaction concluded with a brief question and answer session during which he answered questions ranging from his opinion on the Decision Review System (DRS) and the IPL to his perspective onhandling disputes within an organisation. He emphasised the importance of a sporting philosophy along with a passion for sports to develop in India and these need to be inculcated among the youth. At the same time, this has to be complemented with pertinent infrastructure and support system that is available to one and all. He addressed several sporting issues and was able to provide us with noteworthy perspectives and opinions on sports in general. Several budding sportspersons in the audience were able to relate with what he was saying. However, his advice remains beneficial for not just them, but for each and every one of us.
