Learning of Courage, Peace and Prosperity
Educating children about the significance of national events can be a daunting task, given the complexity of the historical and cultural context. India’s Independence Day is one such event that holds deep meaning and significance.
The beginning of this overwhelming task was to explore how the concept of Independence Day and its importance can be explained to our little learners, in a simple and engaging manner.
The best way was to ask the question, “What is Independence Day?” The most common response was, “Independence Day is the ‘birth’ of India,” or “It is a day to celebrate and be happy for India.”
However, the importance of Independence Day celebration goes beyond the festive revelry. It is about remembering our past, understanding the value of our freedom, and instilling a sense of patriotism. It is also about celebrating the spirit of unity and diversity that defines our country.
To make the concept more meaningful for the kids, the teachers told them the story of India’s struggle for independence. “Long time ago, India was ruled by people from faraway lands who came to trade with us.” And the story goes on!
To deepen this understanding, the students were engaged in various Independence Day-themed activities.
The UKG students were given the freedom of choice to create their own handmade versions of the Indian Tricolour, using ‘jodo’ blocks, lego blocks, clay, paper, glitter, etc. As they used colours, they were explained the significance of each band – saffron for courage, white for truth and peace, and green for prosperity. The Ashoka Chakra in the center represents righteousness.
After completion of the activities, the students were given an opportunity to share their creations and their understandings with the group. This allowed them to reflect on their learning and discuss the importance of the day, in their own words. This engaging educational experience allowed them to learn through play and inquiry.
