Environmental initiatives carried out by DAIS

Report Introduction

“We are environmentally bonded with the earth.”

This thought developed when a few students along with teachers decided to raise awareness about the various vital environmental initiatives carried out by DAIS.

Planning:

DAIS actively promotes and models global environmental awareness. And so over 30 students volunteered and came together to conduct this campaign to ensure that all students of DAIS understand the importance of these environmental initiatives.

The program took shape over the course of a few weeks as all the students went to individual classrooms to spread awareness about waste segregation and our school’s initiatives to help the environment.

The preparations grew every day and constant refinement of the presentations for the various classes continued. Everything from making the awareness video, an original song to engage students, to going to all the classes, was brought together by our planning team, the students from grades 6th, 7th, and 8th, supervised by fellow seniors who constantly gave inputs and made this awareness program come to life.

But the imagination and innovation of the students did not stop there, various interactive games were prepared to engage pupils in the primary classes to better explain the concept of waste segregation.

This initiative not only broadened the minds of the students in the school but also gave more insight to the planning team members in the bargain.

Deadlines were met and several edits were made. A great deal of constructive feedback was also given but the planning team did not get disheartened and continued to improve their work and overall made the awareness program stronger.

Mock sessions were held to train junior members on how to handle class behaviour and to push their imagination to come up with fun games for the classes with the help and support of the Round Square mentors Ms. Manisha Nanda and Ms. Pratima Sridhar.

Now, after days of preparation, all the planning members took on the roles to going to classrooms and after a numerous number of changes and hours of editing, writing, preparing, and refining everyone was finally ready to go and spread awareness to make sure and hope that our school becomes greener.

Spreading Awareness

From 11th October to 19th October the execution of the awareness program began as all the volunteers went to each classroom to interact and talk with students about waste segregation initiatives. All the volunteers eagerly stepped-up to the challenge and confidently spoke with pupils in each classroom.

There was not a single moment of silence and students enthusiastically asked the volunteers questions and contributed to the classroom discussion!

The sessions began with a short introductory video that revolved around the importance of waste segregation, initiatives one can take at school and at home, and the initiatives taken by DAIS to segregate waste such as; paper-waste segregation, garbage into wet and dry bins, and kitchen waste composting. This video was a quick introduction to environmental initiatives that led into the rest of the session. It showed the students how to dispose their waste in school for eg. A banana peel would go into wet waste while a scrap of paper should be thrown into the dry waste bin. Kitchen waste composting was also discussed in depth and many students learnt about the AAGA (a composting equipment used in school to compost the leftovers from the cafeteria to use in plants as manure.

Put a finger down!

We started the session was a quick game of put a finger down to see the student’s prior knowledge and to kick off the rest of the activities planned

Basketball Trash!

Basketball trash was a fun game for the primary classes where there were pictures of different types of (i.e., wet waste and dry waste) and students had to toss the sheet into the correct bin.

Segregation Song!

Everything’s better with a song! And all the students agree to as they were all dancing and singing along with the segregation song, a quick re-cap at the end of the session.

Our view -

We thoroughly enjoyed this entire experience and journey, from designing the introduction video to planning the multiple activities and stitching together the melodious song for the classes. It was truly delightful to see the smiles on the students faces and their enthusiasm towards our environmental awareness campaign. Additionally, we were beyond grateful as each and every student promised to help promote these various environmental initiatives and support our schools’ efforts.

Thank you, DAIS and Round Square, for giving us an amazing opportunity to spread awareness about a vital and relevant topic effecting today’s environment!
